SUMMARY:Workshop: Cultural Expertise in Ancient and Modern History
DESCRIPTION:This workshop takes place within the project Cultural Expertise in Europe: What is it useful for? (EURO-EXPERT) funded by the European Research Council and directed by Livia Holden. This workshop explores cultural expertise in the ancient and modern history of expert witnessing. The stress of this workshop will be on development and change of culture-related expert witnessing\, culture-related adjudication and resolution of dispute\, criminal litigation and other kinds of court and out of court proceedings that make reference to notions of culture with or without the appointment of experts. Two sets of topics will be discussed: the reflection on the definition of cultural expertise and its ancient and modern historical background. This workshop aims on the one hand to understand if cultural expertise has been relevant in court and out of court for the resolution of conflicts in the history of law\, and on the other hand to trace the historical developments of most recent trends of cultural expertise. How does ancient and modern history report the judicial practices involving the specialists of local laws and customs? What have been the most frequent fields of expert witnessing that are related with culture? Who were the experts? What were their links with local communities and also with the courts and the state power? How cultural expert witnessing was received by judges and other members of the legal profession?

SUMMARY:Online Course on Islamic Coins
DESCRIPTION:“State Authority\, Administrative Structures and Its Reflection on Coinage” (winter term 2018/2019) – Prof. Stefan Heidemann \nBi-weekly\, Wednesday\, 4.00 to 6.00 pm CET\nFirst session: Wednesday\, October 31\, 2018\nLast session: Wednesday\, January 23\, 2019 \nThis webinar is part of the “Webinar Initiative in Islamic Material Culture” jointly organized by the Universität Bonn (Bethany Walker)\, the Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität in Munich (Andreas Kaplony)\, NYU in New York (Abigail Krasner Balbale)\, and Universität Hamburg (Stefan Heidemann). \nWhy Coins and Why Administration? \nFor the period prior to the fifteenth century\, historians of Islamic societies have few primary documents or archives at hand\, and even less for the first three centuries of the Empire. Most documents are coming from Egypt and more and more are discovered in Khurāsān. But for the rest of the early Islamic world these documents are largely missing. Islamic coins are the most prolific epigraphic sources for pre-1500 history in the Middle East. Nevertheless\, their potential for understanding history is often neglected. Islamic coins as bearers of texts – there can be up to 150 words on one coin – are unique in the history of civilization. They offer the often needed primary independent evidence for administrative practices and state authority produced in the course of events. Their design includes numerous hints\, which have to be decoded. The coin is able to serve different historiographic fields such as political\, economic\, industrial\, social and legal history as well as Islamic art and material culture. As groups\, coins constitute a source of their own – a sequence of changing texts generated from coins over the decades from a single mint can serve as narrative for local and imperial history. \nWhat Does the Webinar Offer? \nWhile this course is not an introductory course in numismatics\, it is nevertheless designed to introduce historians and archaeologists to the main issues of working with Islamic coins and to answer questions on state authority and administration based on coins and coin sequences. \nThe Webinar explores the different dimensions of the coin as source for state authority and administration. The goal is to learn to exploit coinage for historical research within historical Islamic studies. \nTopics are \n\nTerms and Terminology of Coins and Coinage\nCoin Design and Its Functions\nLegal Context of Coinage and Contracts in the Middle East\nThe Social Function of Money\nThe Administrative History of Coin Production in the Islamic Empire\nWho are the People Named on the Coins and Why?\nComparison Between Coinage and Narrative History Case Studies\n\nPrerequisites for Participation \nSpoken and written proficiency in English language. The course is open to all advanced students in B.A.\, M.A.\, and PhD programs of Islamic studies\, historians\, art historians\, and archaeologists of the Middle East. All students need a computer\, reliable internet access\, and a headset. In a short personal Skype interview in early October 2018\, we will check whether all technical assets are working. \nStudents from Hamburg have to sign up in the campus system ‘Stine’ and to contact Stefan Heidemann as early as possible to register and get the necessary introduction into the technology.  Students from other universities than Universität Hamburg are welcome and have to apply with a short CV and a motivation letter in English. The applications should be sent to Prof Stefan Heidemann (stefan.heidemann@uni-hamburg.de) until October 14\, 2018. Preference is given to students from universities within the network of the webinar initiative “Islamic Material Culture”. Interviews will be held until October 27\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Arabic Codicology Summer Course in El Escorial
DESCRIPTION:The sixth edition of the course “Arabic Codicology: The Islamic Manuscript Heritage in the El Escorial Collection” (June 17-21\, 2019) will provide the students with the basic codicological knowledge and the research procedures needed to study and analyze Arabic manuscripts. Moreover\, it will familiarize them with the libraries of the Arabic-Islamic world in medieval and modern times\, particularly with the library that belonged to the Moroccan sultan Muley Zaydān. \nThe course is designed on an eminently practical dynamic. In the evenings\, the students will be able to apply the theoretical knowledge previously acquired in the mornings to the actual manuscripts hosted at the Royal Library of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (RBME). This is the most important Arabic manuscript collection of Spain and one of the most relevant in Europe. \nThe venues of the summer courses are a privileged location due to the proximity to the Library. The course will be taught entirely in English by leading experts in Arabic Codicology: Prof. Nuria de Castilla (EPHE\, PSL\, Paris) and Prof. François Déroche (CdF\, PSL\, Paris). It is sponsored by the European project SICLE (“Saadian Intellectual and Cultural Life\,” ERC 670628) and is designed for historians\, art historians\, philologists\, documentalists\, antiquarians\, curators\, bibliophiles\, conservation specialists\, etc.\, preferably with a master’s degree.

The program will consist of three parallel language courses – Armenian\, Persian and Turkish – and a series of seminars devoted to topics in connected histories of Armenia\, Iran and Anatolia. The syllabus for the latter part of the program\, designed with consideration of applicants’ specific interests\, as well as required reading materials\, will be made available to students before the start of the program. \nLanguage classes\, held in separate groups five days a week four hours per day\, will be conducted in respective languages (please visit this page to read our instructors’ bios). Seminars\, held twice a week in the afternoons and conducted in English\, will bring together students of all language groups. Additionally\, one day a week will be devoted to poetry recitals\, film screenings or musical performances. \nThe program is primarily\, though not exclusively\, targeted at advanced undergraduate and graduate students with interests in relevant fields. While applicants of different levels will be considered\, preference will be given to those who have already achieved the intermediate or advanced levels. Apart from learning in the classroom\, students will be able to practice their language skills in conversations with fellow participants from Armenia\, Turkey and Iran. \nMA and PhD students engaged in research and interested in working on particular sources will also be given an opportunity to receive additional guidance on individual basis. \nOur aim is that by broadening their knowledge of historical connections between Anatolia\, Armenia and Iran\, and learning to see languages in a wide linguistic and cultural context\, students would gain deeper insights into the topics of their study and discover new interests and new ways of thinking. Furthermore\, we hope that the summer school will build lasting friendships and academic connections that could help breach cultural borders and borders between different scholarly traditions. \nFees and deadlines \nThe cost of the program is 1400 USD\, which covers tuition fees\, class materials and the cost of two field trips. As a non-profit organization\, Mejlis Institute will only use collected fees to cover operational costs of the program\, and any remaining surplus will be reinvested in future programs. Participants are responsible for finding their own accommodation in Yerevan\, which is a very safe and affordable city. Once the list of participants is finalized\, we will put them in touch with one another\, and those considering shared accommodation options will have a chance to connect with potential flatmates. \nThe deadline to apply is May 1\, 2019. Tuition fees must be paid through an international bank transfer by May 15\, 2019. Please fill out the application form here. \nFinancial aid \nApplications from students who are strongly motivated to participate in the program but might not have financial means to pay the program fees will be considered on individual basis. To qualify for a partial or full tuition waiver students will be required to submit a recommendation letter from an academic advisor testifying to the applicant’s merit and circumstances of financial need.
