DESCRIPTION:From the Cyberlaw Clinic: \nThe Cyberlaw Clinic is hiring summer interns for 2025!  Current U.S. JD candidates with an interest in the intersection of tech\, law\, and social justice are invited to join our dynamic team! Summer legal interns work on all aspects of the Cyberlaw Clinic’s caseload and\, like Fall and Spring semester students\, take the lead on the projects they join\, supported by the Clinic staff. Although Clinic projects vary from summer to summer\, they often include substantive law related to the First Amendment\, computer security\, digital privacy\, intellectual property\, civic innovation\, emerging technologies such as AI\, human rights\, reproductive justice and media and the arts. Interns will be involved in supporting the Clinic’s ongoing docket and in planning decisions about clients\, cases\, and topic areas to be addressed in the Clinic’s work during the upcoming academic year. Interns are supervised and mentored by the Cyberlaw Clinic instructors and are provided with feedback and growth opportunities. \nResponsibilities \nCyberlaw Clinic interns will conduct legal work throughout the internship\, including but not limited to conducting legal research; drafting memoranda\, transactional documents\, and court filings; negotiating with third parties; and providing clients with legal advice. \nInterns are responsible for managing their own projects and are expected to balance their work on multiple projects\, schedule client and supervisor meetings\, and maintain client relationships. \nAbout the Cyberlaw Clinic: \nHarvard Law School‘s Cyberlaw Clinic provides high-quality\, pro-bono legal services. DESCRIPTION:From the seminar: \nThis four-day intensive skills seminar will provide participants with an overview of the interests and preoccupations of the Muslim communities of Aragon in the fifteenth\, sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries\, as expressed on their own terms\, in their own texts\, using this unique alphabetic system. We will read\, discuss and analyze unpublished and published manuscript fragments held today in various archives and libraries around the world\, from the perspective of literal meaning\, linguistics\, sociology\, material culture\, historical context\, and so on. The focus is on “hands-on” skills\, and we will read Aljamiado manuscripts together\, progressing through increasingly challenging texts as the course proceeds and students’ abilities develop. The contents will be catered as much as possible to the participants’ interests and needs. DESCRIPTION:Designed specifically for students interested in Islamic law\, this program brings together a group of specialists in different areas of the law to explore new ways of thinking about Islamic law. Some important themes of the program include: bridging the divide between theory and practice\, the question of modernity\, and the role of Islamic law in today’s world. Each content area is covered for one week\, with content presented every morning for three hours. SUMMARY:Leiden Summer School on Philology & Manuscripts from the Muslim World
DESCRIPTION:This summer school is for graduate (MA and PhD) students and researchers who have an interest in handwritten materials\, editing\, and the tradition of editing in the Muslim world. It offers theoretical lectures as well as hands-on practice with samples from the world-famous collections of the Leiden University Library. \nOver the course of two weeks\, specialists from Leiden University and beyond will provide theoretical instruction on issues of editing\, paleography\, conservation and other material aspects of oriental manuscripts. They will also speak about philology\, literacy and orality and the transmission of knowledge in the Islamic manuscript culture\, presenting case-studies from various parts of the Muslim world. Participants can use this information to practice their skills in producing a sample critical edition of a manuscript of their choice\, under the supervision of experts. \nSince the first contributions of scholars such as Scaliger\, Golius and Warner\, the Leiden University Library has housed one of the most important collections of oriental manuscripts in Europe. It includes thousands of Arabic\, Persian and Ottoman manuscripts\, not only from the historic heartlands of Islam but also from Asia\, al-Andalus and Africa. Each participant will have full access to this collection as well as other library services. \nPractical information\n\nLanguage of instruction: English. Non-native speakers are required to have a command of English equivalent to at least TOEFL 550.\nCosts: €750\,- (including access to the library). Participants are expected to provide for their own travel\, visa (if applicable)\, accommodation and living expenses. LUCIS will provide invitation letters for participants who need to apply for a visa.\nReduced fee: Participants who are unable to secure financial support from their home institution may be eligible for reduced fees. DESCRIPTION:The Islamic Manuscript Association—in partnership with Cambridge University Library\, the University of Cambridge’s HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre of Islamic Studies\, and the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation—announces its thirteenth annual Cambridge-based Introduction to Islamic Codicology course\, which will be held from 23 to 27 September 2019. \nThis intensive five-day course will introduce the study of Islamic manuscript codices as physical objects\, or the archaeology of the Islamic book. The lectures will provide an overview of writing supports\, the structure of quires\, ruling and page layout\, bookbinding\, ornamentation\, tools and materials used in book making\, the palaeography of book hands\, and writing Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) manuscript descriptions. During hands-on sessions\, participants will examine Islamic manuscripts from Cambridge University Library’s collections and complete a series of practical exercises on codicological description. \nThe course will be taught by Professor François Déroche\, holder of the Chair of History of the Qur’an\, Text and Transmission at the Collège de France; Professor Nuria de Castilla\, Professor of the Codicology and History of the Manuscript Book in the Islamicate World at the École Pratique des Hautes Études; and Yasmin Faghihi\, head of Near and Middle Eastern Department at Cambridge University Library. \nAll instruction will be in English.
