SUMMARY:Seminar: “An Eastern Gaze: The Making of an Islamic Archive in Early Modern China” with Dror Weil\, Princeton University\, January 27\, 2025 @ 12:00 – 1:20 PM
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nMid-16th century China saw a surprising emergence of a network of local savants who shared an interest in the exploration of Arabic and Persian texts. To that end\, they undertook extensive searches for Arabic and Persian manuscripts\, forgotten in libraries or newly brought to China along a growing influx of foreign visitors\, and meticulously studied their contents. This talk will tell the rather unique story of the hundreds of Arabic and Persian works that circulated in China between the 16th and 18th centuries. It will explore the scholarly practices by which Chinese savants read\, interpreted\, and remade Arabo-Persian works\, while bridging the cultural\, linguistic and epistemic differences. It will shed light on some of the inherent challenges of domesticating a foreign textual archive at the margins of a literary tradition\, and the incentives to transform the traditional manuscript-based scholarship into print. Dror Weil is an Assistant Professor in History of Early Modern Asia (East Asia and the Islamicate World) at Faculty of History\, University of Cambridge and an Official Fellow of King’s College Cambridge. SUMMARY:Call for Applications: Harvard Medieval Studies Undergraduate Research Fellows Program\, June 20\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Committee on Medieval Studies invites applications for its Undergraduate Research Fellows Program\, which offers qualified students in Harvard College the opportunity to work closely with scholars across the disciplines on research projects and initiatives. Unlike research assistants in most other departments\, Research Fellows are employed directly by the Committee on Medieval Studies\, and work with different faculty members throughout the year on a variety of short- and longer-term initiatives. This allows the Fellows the opportunity to develop relationships with an interdisciplinary group of scholars\, and to participate in a range of research tasks within the broad field of Medieval Studies. Fellows should expect to work a maximum of six hours each week during the 2024-25 academic year; a stipend of $1500 per semester will be paid to each Fellow. \nAll current second- and third-year students in any discipline whose work focuses on Medieval Studies are eligible to apply for the Fellows Program. The award will be jointly presented to Michael Cook\, Class of 1943 University Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University\, and Hossein Modarressi\, Bayard Dodge Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University\, in recognition of their decades-long collaboration and their enormous contributions to the fields of Near Eastern and Islamic Studies. The conference will explore a range of topics related to the early history and development of Arabic\, Arab identity\, and early scriptural and legal discourses around language and semantics. DESCRIPTION:WED 21 FEB 2024 | 12.30-1.30 | via Zoom \nEvent::Roundtable on Islamic Land Law \nThe roundtable focuses on the transformation of the Ottoman land system in the 19th century\, particularly examining the 1858 Land Code (Kanunname-i Arazi) and its impact on land laws in the Ottoman Empire’s successor states. With case studies focusing on Bosnia\, Greece\, Bulgaria\, and Serbia\, the roundtable will explore how these changes influenced the balance between labor and capital\, the privatization of estates and agricultural lands\, the legal rights of landholders\, and the link between land ownership and sovereignty. The discussion aims to understand continuity and change between Ottoman and successor state legal systems by analyzing bureaucratic interactions and the use of Ottoman and European legal sources. Our call for papers closes January 26th. \nCall for Papers. We are now accepting proposals for papers and pre-arranged panels from graduate students\, postdocs\, faculty\, and independent scholars. DESCRIPTION:The St Andrews Encyclopaedia of Theology (University of St Andrews\, UK) in collaboration with the al-Ghazali Chair of Epistemology and Civilisational Studies and Renewal at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC-IIUM\, Malaysia) cordially invite you to attend our forthcoming international conference\, Islamic Theology: Uniting Diverse Voices\, now set to take place from the 18 to 19 January 2024 at ISTAC-IIUM\, Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia.  \n   \nIn an increasingly uncertain and divided world\, the Conference will explore Islamic theology in its widest and most inclusive sense\, for a contemporary Muslim audience. By positioning Islamic thought within the context of Divine Unity (tawhid)\, the Conference will foster a balanced and moderate perspective capable of avoiding literalist interpretations\, while also integrating kalam with the fields of tafsir (Qur’anic interpretation)\, falsafa (philosophy)\, tasawwuf (mysticism)\, and fiqh (jurisprudence).   \n   \nThe Conference is free and will give all who attend in person\, whether scholars\, PhD students\, or practitioners\, a unique opportunity to discuss their research with a global audience\, while also exploring Southeast Asia’s rich and diverse Islamic tradition.
