His father\, Abed\, rushes to the chaotic site\, only to find Milad has already been taken away. Abed sets off on a journey to learn Milad’s fate\, navigating a maze of physical\, emotional\, and bureaucratic obstacles he must face as a Palestinian. \nInterwoven with Abed’s odyssey are the stories of Jewish and Palestinian characters whose lives and pasts unexpectedly converge: a kindergarten teacher and a mechanic who rescue children from the burning bus; an Israeli army commander and a Palestinian official who confront the aftermath at the scene of the crash; a settler paramedic; ultra-Orthodox emergency service workers; and two mothers who each hope to claim one severely injured boy. \nA Day in the Life of Abed Salama is a deeply immersive\, stunningly detailed portrait of life in Israel and Palestine\, and an illumination of the reality of one of the most contested places on earth. \nNathan Thrall is the author of The Only Language They Understand: Forcing Compromise in Israel and Palestine. He spent a decade at the International Crisis Group\, where he was Director of the Arab-Israeli Project\, and has taught at Bard College\, New York. He lives in Jerusalem. \nKenneth Roth is the former executive director of Human Rights Watch\, one of the world’s leading international human rights organizations\, which operates in more than 90 countries. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch in 1987\, Roth served as a federal prosecutor in New York and for the Iran-Contra investigation in Washington\, DC. A graduate of Yale Law School and Brown University\, Roth has conducted numerous human rights investigations and missions around the world. SUMMARY:Fall 2023 Works-in-Progress Workshop: Comparative Constitutional Law in the Global South\, Columbia Law School
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nColumbia Law School invites submissions for a works-in-progress workshop in comparative constitutional law. The workshop\, convened with the support of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Fund at Columbia Law School (the “Ambedkar Fund”)\, will focus on themes that are linked to the theory and practice of constitutionalism in the Global South. We welcome\, for example\, papers that study the challenge of democratization and of democratic stability; that address the problems of weak state capacity and state failure; that consider the relationship between economic growth\, welfare\, and constitutionalism; that explore shifts in regulatory approaches and institutions as countries progress and develop; and so forth. \nSubmissions are invited from scholars at all stages\, though we especially welcome younger scholars\, including advanced graduate students\, postdoctoral fellows\, and junior faculty. \nSubmission Instructions\nInterested scholars should submit an abstract (roughly two pages) along with their CV by March 1\, 2023\, to Ms. Bree Adesanya\, at aadesanya@law.columbia.edu. SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Symposium on Copyright in Islamic Legal Tradition\, ISAR Research Center\, Istanbul\, October 15\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:In today’s contemporary landscape\, the intricacies surrounding copyright and intellectual property rights have gained significant prominence. The rapid advancement and diversification of digital technologies have given rise to a multitude of copyright-related challenges. Although numerous legal systems address copyright through various theoretical frameworks\, such as personality\, labor\, and utilitarian theories\, the comprehensive examination of this subject from the perspective of Islamic law remains relatively unexplored. \nThe “Copyright in Islamic Law” project\, under the auspices of ISAR Research Center\, has been exploring the potential of this perspective through a reading group on the Western foundations of copyright\, a workshop on scholarly approaches within Islamic legal tradition\, and a lecture series called “Copyright Talks” featuring renowned researchers. Taking our contribution a step further\, the project’s fourth step is the “Symposium on Copyright in Islamic Legal Tradition” which will critically examine the intersection between copyright and Islamic legal tradition\, uniting diverse researchers from various disciplines. \nThe symposium aims to address a range of key inquiries that lie at the heart of the discussion on copyright within the Islamic legal context. These questions include\, but are not limited to\, the following: \n– The principal factors influencing ongoing debates surrounding copyright\,\n– The role of the madhhab tradition in shaping contemporary discourses on copyright\,\n– The reasons\, obstacles\, and potential consequences associated with endeavors aimed at justifying copyright\,\n– The strengths and weaknesses inherent in attempts to provide a perspective on this issue\,\n– The relationship between modern legislative frameworks in Muslim societies and the Islamic legal tradition\,\n– Insights from pre-modern legal legacies\,\n– Other problems\, issues\, and challenges relating to the broader questions at the intersection of Islamic law and copyright. \n\n\n\n\nWe seek original scholarly contributions that delve into the intricate connection between copyright law and the Islamic legal tradition. We also welcome submissions exploring various dimensions of intellectual property\, but priority will be given to submissions that center around copyright-related themes. \n\n\n\n\nSubmissions and funding: Please submit an abstract of no more than 350 words and an academic resume at https://forms.gle/Z8yk9yxyGEcX3q8h8 by October 15\, 2023. \nParticipants will be notified by November 15\, 2023\, about their submission. In this book\, Aslıhan Gürbüzel shows how the early modern period was\, in fact\, crucial to the formation of new kinds of political agency that challenged\, negotiated with\, and ultimately reshaped the Ottoman social order. Taming the Messiah offers a new method of studying public political life by focusing on the variety of religious visions and lifeworlds native to Ottoman society and the ways in which they were appropriated and repurposed in the pursuit of new forms of civic engagement. \nAslıhan Gürbüzel is an assistant professor of Ottoman history at the McGill Institute of Islamic Studies in Montreal. She completed her PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University in 2016. DESCRIPTION:Call for Abstracts: Thematic Dossier on the Indian Ocean \nAl-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā: The Journal of Middle East Medievalists announces a thematic dossier on Indian Ocean histories guest edited by Jyoti Balachandran\, to be published in 2025. To that end\, we are soliciting original research articles that employ the Indian Ocean as their analytical framework to trace and recover the multiple histories that shaped the medieval Middle East\, expansively defined to include all geographies with prominent Muslim political\, religious\, or social presences between the rough parameters of 500 and 1500 CE. Articles that extend the timeline will also be considered based on conceptual connections with other submissions. By emphasizing the significance of the Indian Ocean as a historical category\, we are particularly interested in research that goes beyond solely commercial connections to highlight the political\, social\, cultural\, and intellectual dimensions of transoceanic interactions. Building upon the growing scholarly recognition of the importance of expanding our linguistic and archival base to write such histories\, we encourage articles that employ archives and texts in one or more regional/inter-regional language(s) of the Indian Ocean in a substantial way. By focusing on a multiplicity of histories and perspectives\, we hope to underline the complexity and heterogeneity of the maritime context of the Indian Ocean.  \nAl-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā: The Journal of Middle East Medievalists is the only open-access\, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the medieval Middle East. Special interest will be in papers focused on the conference theme of “Defending Democracy.” Broadly speaking\, these papers examine how Islamic law operates in constitutional democracies and the challenges\, as well as opportunities\, that arise. The amount in the fund at that time (including MESA’s contributions) will determine the final number of 2023 travel grants.
