SUMMARY:Islamic Law Speaker Series: “The Imam of the Christians: The World of Dionysius of Tel-Mahre\, c. 750–850” with Philip Wood\, Program in Islamic Law\, May 14\, 2024 @ 12:30 – 1:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, May 14\, 2024 at 12:30-1:30PM US EST via Zoom\, Philip Wood (Aga Khan University) will give a book talk on The Imam of the Christians: The World of Dionysius of Tel-Mahre\, c. 750–850 (Princeton University Press\, 2021) as part of our Islamic Law Speaker Series. This book examines how Christian leaders adopted and adapted the political practices and ideas of their Muslim rulers between 750 and 850 in the Abbasid caliphate in the Jazira (modern eastern Turkey and northern Syria). Focusing on the writings of Dionysius of Tel-Mahre\, the patriarch of the Jacobite church\, Wood describes how this encounter produced an Islamicate Christianity that differed from the Christianities of Byzantium and western Europe in far more than just theology. In doing so\, Wood opens a new window on the world of early Islam and Muslims’ interactions with other religious communities. Register today!

SUMMARY:Call for Papers: De Jure: Jurnal Hukum dan Syar’iah\, June 2024
DESCRIPTION:From the journal: \nThe development of Islamic law in modern countries is an interesting study material for scholars and policymakers. Islamic law is believed to be able to build a civil society. De Jure: Jurnal Hukum dan Syar’iah aims to be an active forum to discuss new ideas about the development of Islamic law in Muslim or non-Muslim countries. This journal is not a forum for normative reflection on Islamic law but it focuses on the implementation\, adaptation\, compromise\, or absorption of Islamic law in the national law of a country based on the principles of democracy\, justice\, rule of law\, tolerance\, and peace building. \nDe Jure: Jurnal Hukum dan Syar’iah focuses on contemporary issues in the field of Islamic law in indonesia and muslim countries with gender\, political\, and human rights approaches. \nThis journal provides insight into the contemporary dynamics of Islamic law by focusing on the question of how Islamic law adapts to various interests so that it becomes state law. This journal focuses on what Muslims actually do in order to accommodate Islamic law in a modern legal state.  De Jure considers that Islamic law can be used as a basis or source for the formulation of modern state law today. \nArticles that make a more general theoretical or comparative contribution are preferable to those that focus narrowly on a particular society. Papers based on a single country or case should also address issues relevant to the implementation of Islamic law outside the country in question. \nDe Jure: Jurnal Hukum dan Syar’iah published by the Sharia Faculty of Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang\,East Java\, Indonesia.  De Jure has been accredited (SINTA2) by The Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia (Decree of the Director General of Strengthening Research and Development Ministry of Research\, Technology and Higher Education No. 30/E/ KPT/2019). Since Volume 14 issue 2 2022\, the editors only accept and publish articles in English only. \nFor more information\, visit here.

SUMMARY:Call for Applications: Harvard Medieval Studies Undergraduate Research Fellows Program\, June 20\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Committee on Medieval Studies invites applications for its Undergraduate Research Fellows Program\, which offers qualified students in Harvard College the opportunity to work closely with scholars across the disciplines on research projects and initiatives. Unlike research assistants in most other departments\, Research Fellows are employed directly by the Committee on Medieval Studies\, and work with different faculty members throughout the year on a variety of short- and longer-term initiatives. This allows the Fellows the opportunity to develop relationships with an interdisciplinary group of scholars\, and to participate in a range of research tasks within the broad field of Medieval Studies. Fellows should expect to work a maximum of six hours each week during the 2024-25 academic year; a stipend of $1500 per semester will be paid to each Fellow. \nAll current second- and third-year students in any discipline whose work focuses on Medieval Studies are eligible to apply for the Fellows Program. In addition to a cover letter detailing their interest in the program and their academic background in Medieval Studies\, and a resumé indicating their research skills (e.g. database\, web design\, language knowledge\, training with manuscripts\, etc.)\, applicants also should arrange for a letter of recommendation to be submitted under separate cover from a faculty member\, attesting to their academic and research potential. \nCompleted applications may be sent to: Undergraduate Research Fellows\, Harvard University Committee on Medieval Studies\, Barker Center 120\, 12 Quincy Street\, Cambridge MA 02138. Electronic submissions (in PDF format) can be sent to Sean Gilsdorf (gilsdorf@fas.harvard.edu). All materials must be received by Friday\, 20 June 2024 for full consideration.
