SUMMARY:MESA 2023 Travel Grants for Graduate Students and Contingent/Precariously Employed\, September 13\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:From MESA: \nMESA’s Travel Grant program awards $500 grants to students and to precariously employed or contingent faculty who have no other institutional support to attend the conference. \nThis year\, we have received 140 applications from students and from contingent faculty/precariously employed. \nSo that we can offer the maximum number of travel grants\, the Board is issuing a challenge to our members to raise funds in solidarity with precarious labor as well as students in our field. \nWe will be conducting the lotteries for travel grants on September 13. The amount in the fund at that time (including MESA’s contributions) will determine the final number of 2023 travel grants. Since eligible applicants will exceed the number of grants available\, qualified applicants will be entered into lotteries by random selection.

SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Islamic Law & Constitutionalism\, AALS Annual Meeting\, September 15\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Deadline for Submission: September 15\, 2023 \nPanel Sponsor: Islamic Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) \nThe Islamic Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) invites submission of papers for its panel entitled Islamic Law and Constitutionalism at the annual meeting in Washington\, D.C. in January 2024. \nThe panel will discuss topics relating to Islamic law and constitutions\, primarily from the modern period. Special interest will be in papers focused on the conference theme of “Defending Democracy.” Broadly speaking\, these papers examine how Islamic law operates in constitutional democracies and the challenges\, as well as opportunities\, that arise. We anticipate that papers might explore a number of issues in Muslim-majority states with commitments to Islamic law and to rights regimes\, including (but not limited to): questions around legislation and interpretation\, the extent to which Islamic law can or should be a source of state legislation\, Islamic law supremacy clauses\, the balance of rights\, religious obligations and freedoms\, who has the authority to interpret and determine the content of Islamic law\, the role of popular sovereignty\, constitutional reform\, and the place of tradition within democracy. \nPaper proposals of no more than 500 words should be sent to Adnan Zulfiqar (adnan.zulfiqar@rutgers.edu) no later than September 15\, 2023. The Section welcomes submissions from academics at all levels: tenured\, pre-tenure\, non-tenure track\, fellows\, visiting assistant professors\, adjunct professors\, graduate students\, etc. You do not need to be based at a law school to submit a paper proposal. \nNote that presenters will be expected to pay the membership and registration fees to attend AALS (www.aals.org).

SUMMARY:Call for Abstracts: Thematic Dossier on the Indian Ocean\, September 30\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Call for Abstracts: Thematic Dossier on the Indian Ocean \nAl-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā: The Journal of Middle East Medievalists announces a thematic dossier on Indian Ocean histories guest edited by Jyoti Balachandran\, to be published in 2025. To that end\, we are soliciting original research articles that employ the Indian Ocean as their analytical framework to trace and recover the multiple histories that shaped the medieval Middle East\, expansively defined to include all geographies with prominent Muslim political\, religious\, or social presences between the rough parameters of 500 and 1500 CE. Articles that extend the timeline will also be considered based on conceptual connections with other submissions. By emphasizing the significance of the Indian Ocean as a historical category\, we are particularly interested in research that goes beyond solely commercial connections to highlight the political\, social\, cultural\, and intellectual dimensions of transoceanic interactions. Building upon the growing scholarly recognition of the importance of expanding our linguistic and archival base to write such histories\, we encourage articles that employ archives and texts in one or more regional/inter-regional language(s) of the Indian Ocean in a substantial way. By focusing on a multiplicity of histories and perspectives\, we hope to underline the complexity and heterogeneity of the maritime context of the Indian Ocean.  \nAl-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā: The Journal of Middle East Medievalists is the only open-access\, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the medieval Middle East. To be considered\, please submit a title and abstract of no more than 500 words to jzb461@psu.edu by September 30\, 2023. An informal draft workshop will be held in Spring 2024\, and complete articles will be due by September 15\, 2024. All submissions will be subject to the journal’s peer review process.

SUMMARY:Book talk: “Taming the Messiah: The Formation of an Ottoman Political Public Sphere\, 1600-1700” by Aslihan Gurbuzel\, CMES\, Harvard University\, October 3\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:From the CMES website: \nDate: Tuesday\, October 3\, 2023\, 5:00pm to 6:30pm; Location: CMES\, Room 102\, 38 Kirkland St\, Cambridge\, MA 02138 \n\nAslihan Gurbuzel\, Assistant Professor of Ottoman history\, Institute of Islamic Studies\, McGill University; Discussant: Hannah Marcus\, John and Ruth Hazel Associate Professor of the Social Sciences; Interim Faculty Director of the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments\, Harvard University\n\n\nIn the history of the Ottoman Empire\, the seventeenth century has often been considered an anomaly\, characterized by political dissent and social conflict. In this book\, Aslıhan Gürbüzel shows how the early modern period was\, in fact\, crucial to the formation of new kinds of political agency that challenged\, negotiated with\, and ultimately reshaped the Ottoman social order. Taming the Messiah offers a new method of studying public political life by focusing on the variety of religious visions and lifeworlds native to Ottoman society and the ways in which they were appropriated and repurposed in the pursuit of new forms of civic engagement. \nAslıhan Gürbüzel is an assistant professor of Ottoman history at the McGill Institute of Islamic Studies in Montreal. She completed her PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University in 2016. Her research and teaching interest include History of the Ottoman Empire\, Islamic Political Thought\, Religious Movements to 1800\, and Manuscript Studies. \nFor more details\, visit here.

SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Symposium on Copyright in Islamic Legal Tradition\, ISAR Research Center\, Istanbul\, October 15\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:In today’s contemporary landscape\, the intricacies surrounding copyright and intellectual property rights have gained significant prominence. The rapid advancement and diversification of digital technologies have given rise to a multitude of copyright-related challenges. Although numerous legal systems address copyright through various theoretical frameworks\, such as personality\, labor\, and utilitarian theories\, the comprehensive examination of this subject from the perspective of Islamic law remains relatively unexplored. \nThe “Copyright in Islamic Law” project\, under the auspices of ISAR Research Center\, has been exploring the potential of this perspective through a reading group on the Western foundations of copyright\, a workshop on scholarly approaches within Islamic legal tradition\, and a lecture series called “Copyright Talks” featuring renowned researchers. Taking our contribution a step further\, the project’s fourth step is the “Symposium on Copyright in Islamic Legal Tradition” which will critically examine the intersection between copyright and Islamic legal tradition\, uniting diverse researchers from various disciplines. \nThe symposium aims to address a range of key inquiries that lie at the heart of the discussion on copyright within the Islamic legal context. These questions include\, but are not limited to\, the following: \n– The principal factors influencing ongoing debates surrounding copyright\,\n– The role of the madhhab tradition in shaping contemporary discourses on copyright\,\n– The reasons\, obstacles\, and potential consequences associated with endeavors aimed at justifying copyright\,\n– The strengths and weaknesses inherent in attempts to provide a perspective on this issue\,\n– The relationship between modern legislative frameworks in Muslim societies and the Islamic legal tradition\,\n– Insights from pre-modern legal legacies\,\n– Other problems\, issues\, and challenges relating to the broader questions at the intersection of Islamic law and copyright. \n\n\n\n\nWe seek original scholarly contributions that delve into the intricate connection between copyright law and the Islamic legal tradition. We also welcome submissions exploring various dimensions of intellectual property\, but priority will be given to submissions that center around copyright-related themes. \n\n\n\n\nSubmissions and funding: Please submit an abstract of no more than 350 words and an academic resume at https://forms.gle/Z8yk9yxyGEcX3q8h8 by October 15\, 2023. \nParticipants will be notified by November 15\, 2023\, about their submission. To facilitate in-depth discussions and rigorous feedback\, draft manuscripts will be circulated prior to the symposium. Following revisions\, submissions will be published as an edited volume. \nAccommodation and travel expenses will be covered by the organizers. \n\n\n\n\nImportant dates and deadlines:\nAbstract submission: October 15\, 2023\nNotification of accepted submissions: November 15\, 2023\nFull paper submissions: April 1\, 2024\nSymposium date: June 28-29\, 2024 (Istanbul)\nSubmission of revised manuscripts for publication: October 15\, 2024 \n\n\n\n\nQuestions: Please feel free to direct any inquiries to Ali Ekber Cinar at ali.ekber.cinar@isar.org.tr. More information and updates about the “Copyright in Islamic Law” research project may be found at https://www.isar.org.tr/tr/sempozyum-calistaylar/copyright-in-islamic-law-project and http://twitter.com/copyright_islam.

SUMMARY:Book talk: Nathan Thrall’s “A Day in the Life of Abed Salama” – A Book talk with Kenneth Roth\, CMES\, Harvard University\, October 23\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:From the CMES website: \n\nDate: Monday\, October 23\, 2023\, 6:00pm to 7:00pm; Location: Wasserstein 1010\, Harvard Law School campus \nJoin the HKS Carr Center for Human Rights Policy for a book talk with author Nathan Thrall as he discusses his latest book\, A Day in the Life of Abed Salama\, with Carr Center Senior Fellow\, Kenneth Roth. \nMilad is five years old and excited for his school trip to a theme park on the outskirts of Jerusalem\, but tragedy awaits: his bus is involved in a horrific accident. His father\, Abed\, rushes to the chaotic site\, only to find Milad has already been taken away. Abed sets off on a journey to learn Milad’s fate\, navigating a maze of physical\, emotional\, and bureaucratic obstacles he must face as a Palestinian. \nInterwoven with Abed’s odyssey are the stories of Jewish and Palestinian characters whose lives and pasts unexpectedly converge: a kindergarten teacher and a mechanic who rescue children from the burning bus; an Israeli army commander and a Palestinian official who confront the aftermath at the scene of the crash; a settler paramedic; ultra-Orthodox emergency service workers; and two mothers who each hope to claim one severely injured boy. \nA Day in the Life of Abed Salama is a deeply immersive\, stunningly detailed portrait of life in Israel and Palestine\, and an illumination of the reality of one of the most contested places on earth. \nNathan Thrall is the author of The Only Language They Understand: Forcing Compromise in Israel and Palestine. His writing has appeared in the London Review of Books\, Guardian\, New York Review of Books\, and The New York Times Magazine and has been translated into more than a dozen languages. He spent a decade at the International Crisis Group\, where he was Director of the Arab-Israeli Project\, and has taught at Bard College\, New York. He lives in Jerusalem. \nKenneth Roth is the former executive director of Human Rights Watch\, one of the world’s leading international human rights organizations\, which operates in more than 90 countries. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch in 1987\, Roth served as a federal prosecutor in New York and for the Iran-Contra investigation in Washington\, DC. A graduate of Yale Law School and Brown University\, Roth has conducted numerous human rights investigations and missions around the world. He has written extensively on a wide range of human rights abuses\, devoting special attention to issues of international justice\, counterterrorism\, the foreign policies of the major powers\, and the work of the United Nations. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Religion\, Conflict\, and Peace Initiative (Harvard Divinity School)\, Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy (Northeastern)\, Human Rights Program (Harvard Law School)\, the Program in Law and Society in the Muslim World (Harvard Law School)\, and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (Harvard University). \nFor more details\, visit here.

SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Special Section – Lifewriting Annual and Islam
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nLifewriting Annual is a forum for the discussion of all aspects of lifewriting—theoretical\, critical\, and scholarly. We hope that its broad scope fosters lively discussion about the ways that various forms of lifewriting inform each other. We seek critical and scholarly essays and reviews on biography\, autobiography\, memoir\, journals\, diaries\, and letters for this annual publication in book form. We are particularly interested in articles describing and assessing scholarly resources for biographical writing\, i.e.\, collections of manuscripts and letters. Creative pieces combining a lifewriting genre with another genre are welcome for the Crossingssection. \nLifewriting Annual plans a special section dedicated to lifewriting as it intersects with Islam across time and the world. We invite submissions that engage with representations of Islam and Islamic culture in/through biography\, autobiography\, essays\, memoirs\, journals\, diaries\, and letters for this annual publication in online form. Findings is our new forum for the presentation and brief discussion of noteworthy sources of lifewriting. Given the technical capacities of our new form of publication\, we welcome visual as well as textual data\, that is\, descriptions and illustrations of lifewriting material meriting recognition and scholarly investigation by someone other than the discoverer. This forum is an opportunity to share accidental discoveries made while researching another topic\, for instance. We invite libraries and archives to share information about their resources as well. This signals a return to the “source studies” of our predecessor publication.slight \nSubmissions are through our website. Authors should follow Chicago Manual of Style 17th ed. (author/date format). Essays no longer than 15\,000 words; book reviews\, 1\,000-1\,500 words. Use Word format with endnotes.
