DESCRIPTION:The Department of History at Brown University invites applicants for a full-time\, tenure-track position\, at the assistant professor level\, in Southeast Asia. Historically informed research in all subfields\, regions\, and time periods will be considered. The appointment will begin on July 1\, 2024\, or as soon as possible thereafter. Ph.D. or equivalent is required by time of appointment. \nThe department places a high priority on research excellence\, high-quality teaching\, and a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community. Interested candidates should speak to their ability to contribute to each of these three areas in a letter of application. Please also submit a curriculum vitae and writing sample (essay or dissertation/manuscript chapter) via Interfolio. DESCRIPTION:From the CMES website: \nDate: Tuesday\, October 3\, 2023\, 5:00pm to 6:30pm; Location: CMES\, Room 102\, 38 Kirkland St\, Cambridge\, MA 02138 \n\nAslihan Gurbuzel\, Assistant Professor of Ottoman history\, Institute of Islamic Studies\, McGill University; Discussant: Hannah Marcus\, John and Ruth Hazel Associate Professor of the Social Sciences; Interim Faculty Director of the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments\, Harvard University\n\n\nIn the history of the Ottoman Empire\, the seventeenth century has often been considered an anomaly\, characterized by political dissent and social conflict. In this book\, Aslıhan Gürbüzel shows how the early modern period was\, in fact\, crucial to the formation of new kinds of political agency that challenged\, negotiated with\, and ultimately reshaped the Ottoman social order. Taming the Messiah offers a new method of studying public political life by focusing on the variety of religious visions and lifeworlds native to Ottoman society and the ways in which they were appropriated and repurposed in the pursuit of new forms of civic engagement. \nAslıhan Gürbüzel is an assistant professor of Ottoman history at the McGill Institute of Islamic Studies in Montreal. She completed her PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University in 2016. DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nThe deadline for our CfP is coming up on Sunday\, October 08th\, 2023! We look forward to learning from you at our 10th IDHN Conference which will take place on Thursday\, November 09\, 2023. \nWe are calling for contributions from both members and guests\, who are developing or deploying digital methods and tools in the study of Islam and Muslim communities and languages. Our conference is open to participants from both humanistic and scientific disciplines. \nIf you wish to participate in the conference\, please send an email to team@idhn.org with a preliminary title\, abstract (150-300 words)\, and your academic affiliation. \nWe will select four to six presentations for our conference. Each presentation will be 20 minutes long\, followed by Q&A for 10 minutes. We will hold the meeting online on ZOOM; the access code and link will be sent to you in the network’s newsletter. We will schedule our conference to accommodate presenters from all time zones. This schedule will correspond with the morning hours in the Americas and evening hours in Europe and the Middle East. \nPlease share our announcement with your colleagues and students\, and please forward this call to your networks and listservs as well.
