Based on a recently-published work on the Islamic Law Forum, Marzieh Tofighi Darian will discuss the practice of the Guardian Council, the organ of judicial review in Iran. Expanding its constitutional mandate, the Guardian Council has now become the major player in Iran’s constitutional politics. She examines the jurisprudence of the Council with regard to some of the most significant laws adopted in recent years in Iran and look into how the Council evaluates the claims of sharia incompatibility v. constitutional violation.
