Moral Policing in Contemporary Malaysia

During her lunch talk “Intimacy Under Surveillance: Moral Policing & the State in Contemporary Malaysia,” Dr. Nuru Huda Mohd. Razif discussed the public effects of the Malaysian syariah law’s Criminal Offences Act. She specifically discussed how the policing of khalwat (illicit proximity) affected the Malaysian public’s understanding of marriage and intimacy and how “the bureaucratization of Islam opens up avenues for state intervention in Muslims’ intimate lives.” The event was livetweeted at the SHARIAsource Twitter under #NHMRlunchtalk.
